Description of the Course "UNIX Part 2 for OS X (Mac)"

The world of UNIX on Mac OS X is strange and new for both longtime Mac users and other UNIX users alike. For the longtime or returning Mac user, there is a whole new world of software and tools to be explored. UNIX end users familiar with other platforms may be surprised by some of Mac OS X's similarities - and differences.

In this course, you'll learn about using and administering UNIX services and programs from a Mac OS X point of view. You'll learn about command line tools, and their Mac OS X-specific graphical counterparts. Since many Mac OS X users are their own system administrators, you'll find out about the basics of Mac OS X system administration. And, you'll learn how to install UNIX software, as well as how to set up the X Window System, or X11, to run the vast library of X Window System software. You'll also see how to connect to other UNIX systems that you may have access to in your work.

Users of Mac OS X with previous UNIX experience will find this class useful. Whether you're already familiar with Linux or another UNIX variant and are new to Mac OS X, or have just scratched the surface of UNIX on Mac OS X and would like to delve deeper, this class is for you. See the companion course outline for more information about topics covered. Content can be adjusted based on audience interest.

During the two sessions (total class time is 8 hours), there will be hands-on work with Mac OS X.
