Bucky Backup for Mac OS 9
Installation and Setup Instructions

Installation Instructions:

Download the latest version of the Tivioli Storage Manager (Bucky Backup) client for Macintosh. Run the installer and follow the prompts. It will install the Bucky Backup folder in a location that you specify; your Applications folder is recommended.

At the end of the installation, a prompt will ask if you want "the TSM Scheduler Daemon to be started automatically when your system starts." Answer No; this will be set up later.

Basic Setup Instructions

Running TSM Backup for the first time

1) Find the Tivoli Storage Manager folder on your hard disk.

2) Open the TSM Backup application. The first time it runs, you will be taken through the TSM Client Configuration Assistant. On the first screen, you can create a new preferences file or, if you are an existing Bucky Backup user, you can import from an existing preferences file:

Continue by pressing the right arrow in the lower-right corner of the window. This displays:

Enter the address of the Bucky Backup server, as assigned in your registration email. Press the right arrow in the lower-right corner of the window, and this displays:

Enter the address and port number of the Bucky Backup server, as assigned in your registration email. Press the right arrow in the lower-right corner of the window, and this displays:

Enter the node name used when you registered for Bucky Backup. Complete the rest of the setup process by continuing to press the right arrow. You will have the option of modifying other settings; do not worry about this for now.

3) The TSM Login window will then display:

Enter the password you used when you registered. This will be the last time you will be required to enter your password. Click Login.

4) You will then see the TSM Hub window. From here, you can do your first backup.

To begin, click on the Backup button.

5) This Backup window displays:

In this window, one local drive has been selected. You can select other drives and exclude particular files by using the triangular "arrows" to the left of the drive. Go through the hierarchy to locate a file and deselect it.

6) Click on the Backup button to start backing up your selected drives or files to the Bucky Backup server. The first backup will take much longer than subsequent, incremental backups. If you choose, you may let the automatic scheduler complete your first backup for you; see the instructions below.

Setting up TSM Scheduler

To back up your computer on an automatic schedule, you must launch and leave running the TSM Scheduler. Please note that you MUST leave your computer on at all times (and not asleep) for the automatic backup to work!

Once TSM Scheduler is launched, it will display a small window showing the current backup status:

If you click on some other program, this status window will disappear, but the TSM Scheduler program will continue to run in the background. When your appointed backup time arrives, TSM Scheduler will start backing up your drive, using the settings in your TSM Preferences file. To have TSM Scheduler automatically start every time you start your computer, put an alias to TSM Scheduler in your Startup Items folder inside your System folder.

Restoring file(s) from backup

To restore a file, group of files, or folder from backup, open the TSM Backup application. In the main window, click Restore. A window similar to the Backup window (shown above) will appear. Use the triangular "arrows" to navigate to the file(s) or folder(s) you wish to restore and place a check mark next to them. Then click Restore.

Advanced Settings and Commands

Customizing Your Preferences

Many of the settings and options in the TSM Backup preferences either should not be changed or do not apply to Bucky Backup. One of the most common items you may want to change, however, is which disks, files, and folders are backed up on your computer. By default, all local disks are backed up. You may want to exclude particular disks, folders, or files from this backup process. This can be done from the Include-Exclude pane of TSM Preferences.

Files can be excluded (or explicitly included from within volumes or folders that have been excluded) using this window. Simply "exclude" a file or folder by browsing for it on your hard disk and clicking Add. You may remove these exclusions later if you wish. To exclude disks or volumes from the Backup pane, deselect them as appropriate.

For a complete list of all TSM commands and instructions on their use, please see the TSM User's Guide, located inside the Documentation folder in the Tivoli Storage Manager folder or online here.
