Bucky Backup for Mac OS X
Installation and Setup Instructions

Installation Instructions:

Download the latest version of the Bucky Backup client for Mac OS X. Bucky Backup uses a backup product from IBM called Tivioli Storage Manager (TSM).

Run the installer and follow the prompts.

Click Continue.

Select the volume on which to install.

Click Install.

You will be asked for your Mac OS X administrative username and password.

The Tivoli Storage Manager folder will be installed in your Applications folder.

Basic Setup Instructions

Running TSM Backup for the first time

1) Find the Tivoli Storage Manager folder on your hard disk. (If you are an existing user, make sure to find the new version you just installed.)

2) Open the TSM Tools for Administrators application (not Tivoli Storage Manager). Select Tivoli Storage Manager in the window that appears and click OK. You will be prompted for your Mac OS X administrative username and password.

If this is the first time TSM Backup has run, you will be taken through the TSM Client Configuration Wizard. If you already have a previous version of the software installed, your existing settings can be imported.

Note to existing users: if you are upgrading from TSM 5.2.0 or earlier, TSM 5.2.2 and newer uses a completely new scheduler that runs in the background. You no longer have to keep "TSM Mac X Scheduler" running, and you no longer have to stay logged in for scheduled backups to occur. To use the new scheduler, you must run Start the Client Acceptor Daemon by selecting it in TSM Tools for Administrators.

You can create a new preferences file, or, if you are an existing Bucky Backup user, you can import or update preferences.

Enter your Bucky Backup server, which you received when you signed up for Bucky Backup service.

Select TCP/IP.

Enter your Bucky Backup server and port number, which you received when you signed up for Bucky Backup service. The servers and associated ports are:

bucky1.doit.wisc.edu - 1499
bucky2.doit.wisc.edu - 1500
bucky3.doit.wisc.edu - 1501
bucky4.doit.wisc.edu - 1502

Enter the node name used when you registered for Bucky Backup. You will have the option of modifying other settings; do not worry about this for now.

Click Finish.

3) The TSM Login window will then be displayed:

Enter the password you used when you registered. Click Login. The Tivoli Storage Manager window will appear.

4) You can now change other settings by selecting Edit -> Client Preferences.

On the Backup pane, select the volumes you would like you back up. If you just have one disk, or would like to back up all disks in your system, you can leave Back up all local filesystems selected. The following example has just the boot disk selected. The main disk will always show up as "/".

On the Authorization pane, set Password Access to Password Generate. This will store a password locally so that you do not have to log into TSM, and so that the scheduler which will perform automatic backups will be able to log into the TSM server as well.

Be sure to click Apply to save all changes, and click OK. When complete, quit Tivioli Storage Manager.

5) To install the scheduler, which will perform your automatic backups, open the TSM Tools for Administrators application and select Start the Client Acceptor Daemon and click OK. You will be prompted for your Mac OS X administrative username and password. The scheduler will now be running and will automatically perform backups on its predefined schedule.

6) Open the TSM Tools for Administrators application and select Tivoli Storage Manager. From the main Tivoli Storage Manager window, you can do your first backup, restore file from backup, and perform other tasks.

If you choose, you may stop here, and let the automatic scheduler complete your first backup for you. If you wish to manually force your first backup, click on the Backup button and continue.

7) This Backup window is displayed:

In this window, one local drive has been selected. You can select other drives and exclude particular files by using the triangular "arrows" to the left of the drive. Go through the hierarchy to locate a file or folder and deselect it.

8) Click on the Backup button to start backing up your selected drives or files to the Bucky Backup server. The first backup will take much longer than subsequent, incremental backups.

Backing up automatically on your schedule

Your computer will automatically back up new and changed files. To back up your computer on the automatic schedule you specified, you MUST leave your computer on, and not asleep, for the automatic backup to work!

Restoring file(s) from backup

To restore a file, group of files, or folder from backup, open the TSM Backup for Administrators application. In the main window, click Restore. A window similar to the Backup window (shown above) will appear. Use the triangular "arrows" to navigate to the file(s) or folder(s) you wish to restore and place a check mark next to them. Then click Restore.

Advanced Settings and Commands

Customizing Your Preferences

Many of the settings and options in the TSM Backup preferences either should not be changed or do not apply to Bucky Backup. One of the most common items you may want to change, however, is which disks, files, and folders are backed up on your computer. By default, all local disks are backed up. You may want to exclude particular disks, folders, or files from this backup process. This can be done from the Include-Exclude pane of Edit -> Client Preferences.

Files can be excluded (or explicitly included from within volumes or folders that have been excluded) using this window. Simply "exclude" a file or folder by browsing for it on your hard disk and clicking Add. You may remove these exclusions later if you wish. To exclude disks or volumes from the Backup pane, deselect them as appropriate.

For a complete list of all TSM commands and instructions on their use, please see the Help menu in Tivioli Storage Manager, or online here.
